Liposuction

Liposuction

Liposuction (Liposculpture)

Is removal of fat from areas of fat accumulation through small tiny cuts in the skin. Small cannulas with blunt tips with openings near the tip are introduced and fat is sucked out.
Improved techniques recently made liposuction, safer easier and less painful.

- Tumescent Liposuction:
Where the area to be suctioned is injected with large amount of fluids containing local anaesthetic (lidocaine) and epinephrine (vasoconstrictor agent). This will lessen the post-operative pain and also reduce the blood loss, so large amounts of fat can be suctioned.

- Vaser Liposuction:
Where ultrasound waves are used to liquify the fat, which makes fat removal easier.

Liposuction can be done under local anaesthesia if a small amount of fat needs to be removed. General anaesthesia is used if large amounts of fat are to be removed.

Post Operative:

Pressure garments are given to the patients to wear immediately after the surgery, to reduce
swelling and bruising. Pressure garments are worn for 3-4 weeks. Fluids can leak from the wounds in the first 24 hours. If the area suctioned is small then the patient can go back to work the following day. If major liposuction was done then the patient needs a few days before he can go back to work.

Liposuction is intended to reshape the body. Liposuction is not intended to be used for weight reduction and it doesn’t help in treating cellulite or stretch marks. The best candidates for liposuction are patients with a body weight within 15 kg of their ideal weight and have fat deposits that are resistant to diet or exercise.

Some improvement on body contour will be noticed immediately after surgery. Improvement will continue for several months after the procedure. Patients with good quality skin will notice shrinkage of skin in a few months. Liposuction can be done on its own, or combined with other procedures, for example, face and neck lift, breast reduction, and abdominoplasties.
