Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently done procedures in plastic surgery. Dr. Halaseh has done more than 600 procedures.
Indications and Pre-Operative Consultation
The candidates are either:
1- Patients with small breasts.
2- Patients with mild sagging breasts where the breast implant will help to fill the empty skin envelope and lift the sagging nipples.
3- Patients with major sagging breasts, it is advisable to do lifting of the breasts at the same time of performing breast augmentation.
- At your first consultation with Dr. Halaseh, you will be advised to try different sizes of breast implants (sizers) and you can decide with his help the size of breast implant that suits you most. You may bring photos from magazines to show the breast size and shape you have in mind.
- The patient can also discuss the type of the incision (scar). It could be either:
1- Submammary in the breast crease (underneath the breast). It is 3-4 cm on average.
2- Periareolar at the lower border of the areola.
Types of Implants
Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. They may be smooth or textured (rough surface). It can either be round or shaped (tear drop).
The patient can also discuss the type of implant that suits her most.
Most surgeons are using implants filled with cohesive type silicone medical gel.
Procedure
- The operation is done in the hospital under general anaesthesia.
- It takes around one hour.
- The breast implant is placed behind the muscle in most cases as is gives a more natural and aesthetically pleasing look.
- The wound is closed with deep sutures and the skin is closed with steristrips.
Post-Operative
- The patient can go home on the same day.
- She is given a compression bra to wear for 2-3 weeks.
- She can shower the following day.
- She can go back to desk work in 4-5 days.
- She can go back to full exercise in 3-4 weeks.
- Ultrasound, mammogram or MRI can be done in the future to check the implant and the breasts.
- The ability to breastfeed is not affected.
